"Enter The Peeb", by Human Peeb

Enter The Peeb , by Human Peeb I was finishing up at work, when one of my coworkers asked if I could have a listen to his album. So instead of taking the bus home, I put in my earbuds and walked. In doing so, I'd accidentally set up the best listening conditions to listen to Human Peeb's Enter The Peeb . A nighttime walk is the perfect literal journey to accompany the metaphorical journey of this album, and headphones make sure you can hear how he used the left and right channels (when mentioning this to him, he said he mixed the album with headphones on). The album is incredibly bizarre, incredibly engaging, and definitely something to be experienced beginning to end, as a whole. Human Peeb drifts naturally between real instruments, and electronic samples and sounds. Discussing this with him, he mentioned that all instrument samples were made from outside sounds—boxing bags, water, bike spokes, whistling, deodorant cants, etc. The lyrics were very creative, with the ly...

State of the Art, by Gotye

Making Mirrors, Gotye This song is something of a love song about an organ--the Cotillian Model D-575, a favourite of the artist. The lyrics could have been read straight from the back of the instruction manual, and the song uses a lot of sounds from the instrument. What interests me about this song is the way it sort of recontextualizes commercial content to produce an original and interesting song. The song is full of samples of (what I assume to be) old commercials for the aforementioned organ. The title and chorus of the song is interesting, in that while Gotye is repeating "state of the art" over and over, you're fully aware that this organ is no longer state of the art, which summons thoughts of the endless cycle of having to have whatever the latest thing is. In terms of sounds, it makes use of a lot of interesting sounds that make this song fun to listen to, although maybe not exactly a club banger.
